How to Get a Job - Part 1
It takes time and effort to find a job. When you get right down to it, looking for a job is almost a full-time job! There are hundreds of books and publications available at the local library or bookstore that go into great detail but what it really comes down to is finding a job you can succeed at, be satisfied with, and which can support you and your family. Consider the following points in the job search process:
- If you already have a job, DON'T QUIT! You can look for other employment even while you are employed if you really set your mind to it. If you quit first and think later, you could miss just the right opportunity because you need the first job that comes along in order to make ends meet. If you're still working while you look, you can be patient and wait for the right position.
- Determine the type of job you want and are qualified for and develop a job search plan that will take you there. This requires that you consider your work experience, your likes and dislikes, your skills and abilities and your personality type. You must be brutally honest with yourself on this, and when someone asks you what kind of job you are looking for, NEVER say, "I'll take anything."
- Prepare a 1-2 page resume, outlining your education, skills, and work history. Developing a good resume is extremely important and requires more space to explain than is available here. However, there are many agencies and organizations that can help (see below). When sending your resume via email, make sure you use the format requested by the employer. Often resumes written in certain applications, i.e. MS-Word or WordPerfect, will not be successfully transmitted if they are not re-formatted into the proper form.
- Prepare a cover letter that can be adapted to each job opening that you wish to apply for. A cover letter gives you the opportunity to provide more information about yourself, your aspirations, and why you believe you are the best person for the position. For both the cover letter and the resume, neatness and accuracy (no typos, no grammatical mistakes) are critically important. Use spell check and ask a friend to review everything to ensure a quality product. A busy HR director will find it easy to pare down his pile of resumes submitted by simply tossing those that contain such errors.
How to Get a Job - Part 2
Begin your search for job openings. Many openings are "hidden" or unadvertised so you need to be thorough in your search. You can find job openings in many places, including the following:
- Ask your friends and family if they know of any jobs available. Many jobs are filled through the referral of friends from a company's current employees.
- Visit employers who you know or have always wanted to work at. However, call in advance and request an interview.
- Check the newspaper classified ads, both local and regional. Also, newspaper articles about new businesses and expansions also can give clues to where jobs might be located.
- If you are in school, job openings are often available at the schools' Career Placement office. Also, some schools have part-time jobs available through the work-study programs.
- Perusing the phone books will provide you with a listing of all the employers in the area. However, unless you narrow your search to certain industries, it will be a cumbersome task.
- Public agencies and organizations, such as Butte Community Employment Center offer free job-search services. Centers are located in Chico at 2445 Carmichael Dr. and in Oroville at 78 Table Mountain Blvd.
- The Internet has many job search websites, including local ones such as chicojobs.com, chicohelpwanted.com, and craigslist.com. Also, there are national websites, such as Monster.com, and Careerbuilder.com. One job site that everyone should consider is the California Job Bank, located at caljobs.ca.gov. Many employers are required to post their jobs at this site, especially if they receive state or federal funding.
- Employment Agencies, such as Blue Star Solutions, the only locally-owned employment agency in Paradise, often have temporary and long-term positions with employers who do not wish to manage their own personnel administration. Blue Star Solutions maintains a pool of qualified applicants for positions which may become available in the area, AND there is no fee to the applicant.
- Send your resume. As you locate jobs for which you are qualified, mail, fax, or e-mail (not all of those) a copy of your resume and a cover letter specifically addressed to that company, noting how your skills and abilities fit that particular job opening. Keep a record of all of your applications/resumes submitted. Be sure to follow-up with the companies a few days after submission.
- When you are contacted by an employer for an interview, practice your interviewing skills with a friend beforehand. Sometimes, an employer will initially interview you over the phone so be prepared.
- Consider the appropriate attire for the interview. Applicants should reflect the attire of the current incumbent and/or appropriate work clothes for the particular type of company and position.
